The complex that includes this building is fragmented, decontextualised among stagnated references and designs from other times that have lost their justification and merely subsist as if forgotten.
The intervention sought to correct urban anomalies, to unite instead of separate, to achieve a city by giving it continuity. In this sense, there was a concerted effort to create a wider public space: the plaza with various equipments, and open space for the meeting of people and of the two fabrics or parts of the city that were meant to be regenerated.
Espinho’s Art and Culture Forum (FACE – Fórum de Arte e Cultura de Espinho) is a building that seeks to integrate a complexity of demands, given the diversity of functions established by the programme. The municipal museum was based on a pre-existing building, once one of the most important Portuguese canneries that we wanted to maintain and rehabilitate, and an intervention that bordered on restoration.
The project respects the pre-existing typology, its shape, scale and the traditional constructive process. A building for various schools: one for higher education, a multimedia school, a school for animated films and, lastly, an exhibition space and an auditorium which is designed to be shared and open to the community.
