The project for the Duas Igrejas school is a subtle game of contrast and opposites. While it has a geometric exterior made from exposed concrete, with the characteristic coldness and roughness of this material, the interior spaces are refined, fluid, light and polished. The linearity of the functional composition and organisation is contrasted by the interplay of volumes aligned along a central corridor, which provides it with unity and rhythm but also variation and surprise.
The façade reveals the rigorous proportions that were at the core of this project, where the formwork pattern is well defined and inscribed on the exterior as evidence of a constructive timeframe and process. The interior, marked by windowpanes that separate the arid volumes comprising the classrooms, has a distinctive interplay of light and dark.
The central corridor is its dorsal spine: a space for circulation and permanence that coordinates and organises the different modules, which make this building an imaginative and playful setting that also teaches values, encourages knowledge and fosters learning. In essence, more than shapes, we design spaces where questions can be asked.
